I’m a savvy shopper and you can actually save cash by ditching Aldi for M&S – two breakfast essentials are cheaper too

ALTHOUGH many may assume that shopping in Aldi is a cheaper option, one cash-savvy shopper recently revealed how you can slash the costs by switching to Marks & Spencer instead.

Taking to TikTok, the money-smart foodie Kathryn Leech shared the popular food items that are actually more expensive at Aldi than fellow rival M&S.

According to Kathryn – better known to her 39k fans on the platform as @katesaves – Aldi offer the same basics as M&S and in some cases, such as with certain veggies, it’s more purse-friendly to shop at the latter instead.

The cash-savvy woman, who’d done the comparison earlier this month, said she was ”shocked at some of prices” upon walking around Aldi.

”I noticed that a lot of their basic and essential items were actually the same price as M&S – sometimes, they undercut them by a penny,” she revealed in the video.

”Sometimes, they were actually more expensive.”

For instance, a head of iceberg lettuce costs 79p and Aldi, whilst M&S offer the same product for 80p in their Remarksable Value section.

The same penny difference was spotted with their cucumbers – Aldi were offering the popular salad essential for 89p and M&S shoppers would spend 90p on the item.

Round tomatoes, meanwhile, were priced at 95p at both supermarkets – however, a bag of radishes actually cost less at M&S than Aldi, where they’re selling for 50p and 59p respectively.

Other items which Kathryn had a look at included granulated white sugar (£1.09 at Aldi and £1.10 at M&S), wholemeal bread (79p and 75p), as well as semi-skimmed milk (95p and 90p).

If you love a hearty English breakfast, you may be better off doing your weekly food shop at M&S too, as two loved breakfast essentials were also spotted cheaper there.

”What I was really shocked at was the eggs – a six pack of eggs in Aldi is £1.35. In M&S, it’s £1.30,” Kathryn pointed out.

Pork sausages, also, seemed to be less costly in M&S than Aldi, as the latter was selling them for £1.89, whilst M&S were offering the meat favourite for £1.80.

”Things like bread and milk seemed to be exactly the same price.

”I do know Aldi used to do a cheaper bread for, like, 35p but I haven’t seen that in such a long time.

”I will give Aldi the benefit of the doubt – they do have cheaper store cupboard products, such as baked beans and anything that’s in a tin essentially seem to be a lot cheaper in Aldi.”

Aldi vs Marks & Spencer food shop

Long grain rice: £1.35 (Aldi) and £1.25 (M&S),

Baked beans: 42p and 50p,

Iceberg lettuce: 79p and 80p,

Cucumber: 98p and 90p,

Six-pack of tomatoes: 95p and 95p,

Radishes: 59p and 50p,

1kg of sugar: £1.09 and £1.10,

Six-pack of eggs: £1.35 and £1.30,

Wholemeal bread: 79p and 75p,

Semi-skimmed milk: 95p and 90p,

Pork sausages: £1.89 and £1.80.

To ensure you don’t waste extra money at the store on their ”boujee” items, Kathryn said she likes to ”write a list” and keep her ”head down” to avoid the temptation.

Dozens of fellow shoppers flocked to comments to share their thoughts, with one saying: ”People need to give M&S a chance – reasonable on a lot of products and excellent quality!”

Another chimed in: ”We switched to M&S & have actually saved money! Everything lasts longer, so we’re buying less.”

A third agreed, adding: ”I think as long as you don’t buy luxury products (ready meals, expensive meats, ice cream etc) M&S is better value for money, always has better dates on it as well so less food waste.”
