WHEN hunger strikes, or you’re in need of a quick and cheap bite, Greggs is always the answer.

With a huge variety of scrumptious pastries like steak bakes, sausage rolls and vegetable bakes, they’ve got something for everyone, with each baked goodie boasting its own flavour.

We all love a cheeky Greggs – but did you know there’s a hidden meaning behind the patterns on the baked goodies?[/caption]

Strictly Come Dancing star Sam Quek recently shared the fascinating fact on Instagram[/caption]

But, despite the bakery chain being a firm high street favourite for several decades, it’s only now that fans are catching on to a mind-blowing detail.

The hidden key to identifying the pastry lies in the pattern on its top – a piece of fascinating information recently highlighted by none other than Strictly Come Dancing star, Sam Quek.

In her Instagram feed, while devouring one of their iconic sausage rolls, the 36-year-old beauty disclosed: “I was today years old when I ONLY just realised each pasty has a different pattern to tell you what it is.”

A closer look at the snapshot revealed the handy guide outlined right on Greggs‘ signature packaging, with popular bakes listed alongside their corresponding pastry designs.

This revelation sparked a huge conversation online, as evidenced by the post racking up over 4,200 likes.

The comments section was packed with different reactions.

One person said: “A worker at Greggs told me this some years ago. My mind was also blown. I had a Katsu Chicken bake, today. Oh my.”

Another was gobsmacked, writing: “Omg I didn’t know this either?!”

While yet another commented: “I have never looked at the bag – just the contents.”

If you’re wondering about the significance of those pastry patterns, here’s what foodies need to know:

  • Diagonal slits – steak bakes
  • Wavy horizontal lines – chicken bakes
  • V-shape marking – cheese and onion bakes
  • Straight, horizontal lines – sausage and baked bean melts

Next time you pop in to snap up your favourite bake, you might just give it a closer look.

It’s said that Greggs employees are trained to recognise the markings, so they know what’s inside before serving the hungry customers.

Greggs closures

Bakery chain Greggs is set to pull down the shutters of one of its Cambridge stores for the last time on March 31.

The shop is set to shut as part of the Greggs estate strategy, which will see the chain open more stores this year.

It already has over 2,500 shops across the UK including 500 with franchise partners such as petrol stations.

Staff at the Cambridgeshire shop will be relocated to nearby branches where possible.

The nearest shop is located in Station Square.

The Cambridge store is not the first Greggs shop to shut this year.

A Greggs store in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, closed for good on January 18.

The branch reportedly closed due to a dispute over rent, according to the Bucks Free Press.

Meanwhile, a Greggs shop on Foleshill Road, Coventry, shut forever on January 4.
