A British surf star who broke part of his back while riding waves four years ago has jumped straight back into the water – again.
Andrew Cotton, 39, made headlines in November 2017 for fracturing his lower spine while surfing one of the biggest waves of all time at Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal.
He was even handed the Red Bull Big Wave Awards’ wipeout of the year prize.
But the dad-of-two, from Devon, ended up making a name for himself as a determined athlete who worked to heal his injury after he returned to Nazaré to surf a potentially record-breaking 80ft wave last year.
He said previously: ‘I knew 100% that I’d be back. The accident was such big news, I thought, “I don’t want to be remembered for a wipeout. I’ve got to come back and get a bigger wave.”‘
This year was no different as Andrew – who goes by the nickname Cotty in the surfing world – travelled to Nazaré for big wave season, which takes place from October to March.
He was pictured on Monday surfing down a huge wave in a full wetsuit, with a hood to protect him from the cold Atlantic ocean.
Cotty’s 80ft wave from last year may be the tallest wave ever surfed, a title currently held by US surfer Garrett McNamara for his 78ft wave in 2011, but the verification process is slow.
In fact, Cotty may have broken his own record in 2013 after riding what many believe was a 100ft wave.
Besides all the previous big wave surfs waiting to filter their way into history, the most recent season has only just started meaning there are still many more waves to come.
Cotty, whose 80ft wave did not make the finals this year, wrote on October 29: ‘Good luck to all the finalists of the Red Bull Big Wave Awards tonight.
‘What a crazy year with some extremely big waves surfed all over the globe.
‘The biggest wave is always the goal among others so obviously disappointed not to make the final with this wave that Garrett N Nicole McNamara towed me into last October, but super motivated to go even bigger and faster this season.’
His Instagram account is currently littered with recent pictures of the water fanatic in the sea in Nazaré.
This is likely where he will try and stay for most of winter, chasing the next biggest wave.
Cotty is in Nazaré with his son Ace, who was pictured taking after his dad in a wetsuit, wakeboarding and outlining his name in the sand.
Cotty has long been credited with putting Britain on the surfing map, helping to get Ireland recognised for its taller swell.
Most recently Cotty has starred in an HBO series called 100 Foot Wave, following his story and those of other big wave pioneers.
The winner of the Red Bull Big Wave Awards stands to get a staggering £260,200.
The competition ‘honours the athletes pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and celebrate the most death-defying surfing of the season’.
