Nintendo has filed multiple trademarks in relation to GameCube controllers, sparking hope that the console’s games will arrive on Nintendo Switch Online.
Following the addition of Nintendo 64, Game Boy, and Game Boy Advance titles on Nintendo Switch Online, many have hoped GameCube games will eventually make their way to the system as well.
While that hasn’t happened yet, three trademarks filed in the UK on January 23 and January 25 of this year may indicate plans are afoot for some GameCube-themed announcements.
As spotted by Twitter user Jo Reggelt, the three filed trademarks relate to different elements of the GameCube controller.
While the timing is suspicious, it’s important to note that trademark filings can often be a legal technicality in order to simply stop other companies from imitating products or using a name.
There is, however, a precedent of Nintendo releasing controllers for the Switch to coincide with new console additions to the online suite – which is what happened with the NES, SNES, and Nintendo 64 gamepads for Switch.
The evidence against this theory is the fact you can buy a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate themed controller for the Switch already, so the trademarks could refer to that; although three seems a bit overkill for that.
With rumours that the Switch 2 could release this year, there’s a chance Nintendo could bolster its online offering for the next system. It might be a tricky sell though, coming off remastered GameCube games for Switch like Metroid Prime, Pikmin 1+2, and the upcoming Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.
It’s currently unclear if the traditional Nintendo Direct will happen in February, but if it does, it’s possible that we might see some GameCube appreciation then.
Although the fact that Nintendo has already released major trailers separately, for their upcoming games, suggests it may be a while till we hear from them.
