Naughty Dog has started its next game – doesn’t sound like The Last Of Us 3
The makers of The Last Of Us have begun work on a new big budget game but it doesn’t sound like it’s a sequel to anything they’ve done before.
If you don’t count remakes and remasters it’s now getting on for three years since Naughty Dog released a new game, in The Last Of Us Part 2, and while their next title is known to be a multiplayer spin-off from The Last Of Us, which may or may not be out this year, we still know virtually nothing about it.
According to a new interview with The Last Of Us co-director (in terms of both the game and the show) Neil Druckmann, more information will be released ‘later in the year’ but he’s revealed that the studio’s next project after that is already in development.
Previously, he said that that would be either The Last Of Us Part 3 or a new IP and given the way he’s talking it sounds very much like it is going to be something brand new.
Druckmann didn’t confirm anything either way, but he did acknowledge that fans wanted a third The Last Of Us title. However, he said that the next game had already been chosen, implying that the decision had been made before the TV show was out and became a massive hit.
That alone suggests it isn’t The Last Of Us Part 3, but he also said that there were multiple options and the studio as a whole chose the one it was ‘most excited for’ and which could sustain their interest and passion ‘for years to come’ – given how long a big budget game takes to make.
You can listen to him below, but the way it’s all worded sounds very much like he’s implying the new game is not The Last Of Us Part 3. There is a chance it’s another spin-off but it does sound much more likely that it’s the promised new IP.
We know it’s not a new Uncharted though, as Naughty Dog has already said that they’re finished with the franchise.
Druckmann has refused to talk much about future games while doing the press for the TV show but now it’s over he was a little more open, revealing that Naughty Dog has greatly expanded in size recently and now has the capacity to make multiple games at once.
Assuming they can do at least two AAA games at a time that suggests a huge number of staff, with Druckmann mentioning a large team of producers, directors, and writers that allow them to be more organised and to take on more work.
One side effect of this is that he won’t personally be as involved in all the project, revealing that he isn’t the lead director or writer for the multiplayer game and is just overseeing it.
