Capcom doesn’t seem to have any interest in remaking former Dreamcast exclusive Code: Veronica, so a fan group has taken up the challenge.
Although they’ve never stated as much, Capcom seem to have a plan to remake all of the early Resident Evil games. Resident Evil 2 and 3 are already out and 4 is currently in development – but not Code: Veronica.
Code: Veronica was originally released in 2000, before Resident Evil 4, as a Dreamcast exclusive and was famously intended to be the ‘real’ Resident Evil 3, with the Jill Valentine game designed merely as a side story.
Sony didn’t want their exclusive to play second fiddle to a Sega game though and so they convinced Capcom to change the names. Despite a later PlayStation 2 port, this led to Code: Veronica being largely forgotten, despite it featuring a number of important lore moments.
As if skipping ahead to Resident Evil 4 wasn’t evidence enough that Capcom isn’t planning a remake, there’s also the fact that this fan attempt has been in development since 2019 and Capcom didn’t object to them releasing a playable demo last year.
Following the success of that demo the remake will be released for free later this year, although as three separate chapters.
The original game featured a mix of fixed camera angles and, for the first time in the series, a moving viewpoint.
It’s unclear if the remake is going to keep the fixed camera elements as the trailer implies everything has been turned into a modern third person shooter, very much in line with Capcom’s own remakes.
What definitely will be included is the dodge move from the Resident Evil 3 remake, as well as new animations, fire and rain effects, and improved lighting.
You can read more, and download the demo, on the official website, which also promises a ‘lite’ version to run on lower-powered PCs.
