Renowned singer and songwriter Asaf Avidan has officially become a French citizen, closing a long chapter of his life as an Israeli national. The artist made the announcement in 2024, confirming that he had fully transitioned to French citizenship after spending more than ten years living and creating music in France.
Avidan’s relationship with France began over a decade ago, when he relocated there seeking inspiration and a slower pace of life. He has often spoken about his love for the French countryside, where he now resides. “France has shaped me in so many ways,” Avidan said in a recent interview. “After so many years here, it feels only natural to call this country my home.”
Widely known for his powerful voice and poetic songwriting, Avidan first rose to international fame with Reckoning Song (One Day), which became a global success. Since then, his music has continued to evolve, blending folk, rock, and classical influences. His latest album, Unfurl, released shortly after confirming his French citizenship, reflects this artistic growth and marks a creative renewal.
Recorded in the south of France, Unfurl carries strong cinematic and orchestral elements that critics have described as his most expressive work to date. French media outlets have celebrated the album for its refined sound and its deep connection to the country that now serves as Avidan’s home.
Reflecting on the change, Avidan said, “Becoming French is not about leaving something behind. It is about embracing where my heart and my art have found peace.”
Since finalizing his citizenship, Avidan has continued performing across Europe, including several acclaimed shows in Paris and Marseille. His move to France and new citizenship status have been widely seen as a continuation of his artistic journey and a reaffirmation of his close bond with the French cultural landscape.
“I feel at ease here,” Avidan added. “France has given me freedom, inspiration, and a sense of belonging. This is where I see my future.”
