A reader admits to having unorthodox taste in Legend Of Zelda games but still implores Nintendo to make a sequel with his favourite character.
I always feel a bit left out when people are discussing their favourite Zelda games. I acknowledge that A Link To The Past, Ocarina Of Time, and Breath Of The Wild are all classics but that’s not the same as being your favourite and for me the one I’ve always enjoyed the most is Twilight Princess.
I fully recognise that I’m biased towards it, because it was the first one I ever played. I guess it’s like your favourite James Bond or Doctor Who, where you can’t help being attached to the first one you see, even if you later accept that they’re not necessarily the best.
I understand, in theory, that Twilight Princess is a bit too reliant on copying Ocarina Of Time but that didn’t mean anything to me because I didn’t play that until years later, and even when I did it didn’t seem that similar. So I’m not embarrassed to say it’s still my favourite and a big part of that appeal is the character Midna.
Although it’s not her true form, Midna is a sort of furry imp type character for most of the game and has some real attitude, particularly at the start of the game. A lot of main characters in Zelda can be kind of bland and it’s usually only the side characters, with much smaller roles, that have any kind of personality. But Midna’s not like that.
She’s funny, sarcastic, suspicious, and condescending but in a really entertaining way that makes you like her but not entirely trust her. By the end of the game, she and you, and Zelda, have all become friends but there’s still an air of mystery with Midna, where you don’t entirely know her motivations or what she’s thinking.
Even if my feelings about Twilight Princess are unusual, I don’t think anyone would argue that Midna isn’t one of the best things about the game… so why hasn’t she been seen again?
Zelda games have quite a few recurring characters but no one from Twilight Princess has ever been brought bought into anything else and the only other games Midna has ever been in is Smash Bros. and Hyrule Warriors.
What really annoys me though is that Midna’s music, or at least what I think of as her theme tune, was played in the Tears Of The Kingdom trailer but it was just a red herring. She wasn’t in the game and there were no references to Twilight Princess or the Twilight Realm at all, as far as I ever saw.
So, they must’ve recognised Midna’s popularity, even used the tease of her presence to sell the game, but then did nothing with it. I’m not saying she needed to be In Tears Of The Kingdom but I really wish she would be used in another game.
After Zelda, finally, got her own game I would absolutely love a Midna spin-off. Tingle got two so I don’t see why a character that people actually like wouldn’t do as well.
I know Nintendo doesn’t care about continuity as much as fans but if Twilight Princess is in a particular timeline, then why not build that out and show why it’s different to the others? Anyone’s that beaten the game will know about Midna’s enigmatic final words and I’d definitely like to see what she was thinking with that.
We’ve had a direct sequel to a much older game before, with A Link Between Worlds, which also dealt with expanding on an alternate world only hinted at in the original. I would love to see this approach with Twilight Princess. It doesn’t have to be a sequel in terms of gameplay, they could make it something different and unique, but I would like to see Midna come back and learn something about the realm she is in charge of.
