Sony’s live service shooter has had a disastrous opening week, as it struggles to make an impact even on the PlayStation Store.
Concord might be a competently made, Overwatch-inspired hero shooter, but it’s failed to find an audience following its launch last week.
The Sony published shooter, from Firewalk Studios, is one of many live service projects under development at PlayStation, but based on Concord’s performance those plans may well change in the future.
Since its launch last Friday on PlayStation 5 and PC, Concord has managed to achieve a peak concurrent player count of only 697 players on Steam. For context, Helldivers 2 achieved a peak of 458,709 players when it launched in February, while Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, which is considered a major flop, achieved 13,459 players.
At the time of writing, there are only 93 people playing Concord on Steam, which is a shockingly dismal amount for a game that came out seven days ago.
It’s possible the majority are playing on PlayStation 5 but that wasn’t the case for Helldivers 2, where most players were on PC. Either way, Concord is currently placed 56th on the US PlayStation Store. It appears to be doing even worse on the UK store, where it’s placed 78th under the best-selling games.
Developer Firewalk Studios has already outlined the roadmap for Concord’s first two seasons, which includes additional maps and character cosmetics. Based on these metrics though, it’s unclear how long it will be supported for beyond that.
The reasons for Concord’s failure are difficult to pinpoint, but between its poorly received opening reveal in May and the fact it isn’t free-to-play, it seems poor word of mouth and a general apathy for the concept and setting has led to the disastrous launch.
While some might cite hero shooter fatigue as part of the reason, it’s interesting to note that Overwatch 2 has increased in popularity on Steam in August – suggesting the likes of Marvel Rivals and Concord may have inadvertently driven people back to Blizzard’s hero shooter.
Over the past month, Overwatch 2 has climbed from 46,000 players to around 59,000 on Steam.
It remains to be seen whether Sony will continue to support Concord, and try to reverse its fortunes, but it’s unlikely their plans will change in the immediate future.
