A new look at Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth gives a clearer picture of how its exploration will work and what new content will be added.
The second part of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 remake is edging closer to its release date on February 29, and a new preview clarifies a number of issues fans were asking about, in terms of exactly how it will update the PS1 original.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake was well received when it was released in 2020 and like that game Rebirth will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive at launch, but it’s been unclear how much it will diverge from the original, given how Remake ended.
According to a new preview in Game Informer, Rebirth will have a ‘massive’ world, with enough side quest missions that it can last for 100 hours or more.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi suggests that the main storyline will last around 40 hours, with side content making up about 80% of the exploration-based content.
‘Part of our game design that we took on for Rebirth is that in the main storyline, you’ll be saving Yuffie and Under Junon,’ Hamaguchi told Game Informer.
‘Hearing the stories of the anti-Shinra people living in Under Junon, you could then feel like, ‘What about this Crow’s Nest area that I’m hearing about? Maybe I want to go over there and explore and go into a side adventure on my own to save people.’ We want the player to be able to make these different adventures and go on their own journeys according to their interests.’
The town of Crow’s Nest was not in the PS1 version, so even though Rebirth has a lot of ground to make up – since Remake covered much less than a third of the original’s story – it apparently still has time to be adding extra content on top.
This includes a number of new mini-games, including a rhythm action game where Cloud collects sheets of piano music and a new card game which you can play at various bars.
Despite the seemingly impossible task before it, Remake worked out far better than may dared to hope. That bodes well for Rebirth, although the main concern for many is how far it will go off-the-rails in terms of its story and its meta references towards changing the plot of the original game.
That’s not something that is really mentioned in the new preview and it’s going to be interesting to see if they get the balance right in the new game.
