The etiquette of screenshotting on social media is a complicated one.
If you’re looking to save or screen record people’s stories, reels, or pictures, it’s worth knowing exactly what notification it might trigger.
While some platforms immediately tell users if their content has been screen-grabbed, Instagram – which is owned by Facebook – has different rules.
New features, like limiting the number of likes you can see, or blocking abusive DMs, has changed the app a lot over recent years.
Read on to find out more.
Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story?
No, people will not get notified if you screenshot their story.
You may or may not have received a notification from Instagram saying that one of your followers took a sneaky screenshot of a photo you sent to them across the app.
One of the benefits of Instagram is that a sneaky screenshot of someone’s story can go unnoticed – whether it’s of a celebrity with a huge account, or a pal.
Instagram will only notify you that someone has taken a screenshot when they screenshot a picture or video that you sent them via the Instagram direct message feature.
If you post a picture to your story and someone screenshots you will never know.
Equally if you are looking at your ex’s Instagram and you want the whole squad’s opinion on whether their new squeeze is good looking, you will (probably) not be outed.
So screenshotting from the messenger part of the app is the only time people will receive a notification.
